How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to heat your space.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and provides heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down

When your pressure switch isn’t working correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.

Your furnace will show you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may note short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.

Estimated Repair Cost for Furnace Error Code 228

Before replacing the switch, your Norrell Service Experts  tech will check other parts of your furnace first. A handful of other issues can also create the error code, like a blocked vent or cracked hose.
